Cost savings
Ambulance service is expensive. Unfortunately, ambulance costs are seldom fully covered by insurance companies or Medicare. When "medically necessary" ambulance services are provided to members, FireMed will handle all insurance billing and waive any costs not covered by insurance, such as co-payments and deductibles.
Convenience
Dealing with insurance companies and Medicare is never easy. When you become a FireMed member, you never have to submit your own ambulance bills. All ambulance claims are processed and submitted by our professional billing staff, who are trained to understand the complex and ever-changing rules and procedures of multiple insurance companies and Medicare.
Community support
Your FireMed membership fees support improvements to ambulance services in Albany. Livesaving equipment and training are expensive. Your support helps FireMed invest in up-to-date medical technology and provides opportunities for advanced training to your paramedics and emergency medical technicians.
Part of the Oregon FireMed Network
Wherever you travel in Oregon, your Albany FireMed membership will be honored by 56 other FireMed agencies at no extra cost!

What isn't covered?
FireMed does not cover transportation for non-medical situations when a private vehicle, taxi, wheelchair van, or stretcher van service is available, or for transport to and from doctors’ offices or clinics. The program also does not cover nursing home transportation for treatment normally provided in the nursing home, or transport home from a medical facility, when the patient’s condition does not warrant an ambulance.

The Albany Fire Department’s ride-along program is available in a limited capacity to personnel from outside emergency agencies, educational institutions, and to AFD-sponsored public. All riders must be at least 18 years of age and have an interest in the fire service. An exception to this is for students, at least 16 years of age, who are enrolled in a school Fire/EMS-related educational program approved by AFD administration.
